Vesa-Pekka Rannikko: Specimen
Finish artist Vesa-Pekka Rannikko is having his first exhibition at the Nancy Margolis Gallery opening Sept. 13th and continuing through Oct. 20, 2007.
As a multi-media artist, Rannikko's familiarity with various art-making techniques, such as film, painting and sculpture, lends a fresh perspective to his work. Rannikko creates sculpture/paintings using tinted plaster as his 'paint' building three-dimensional forms on a base of Styrofoam and steel. Each batch of plaster has limited working time, so there is a gestural, painterly quality to his sculptures.
Rannikko crops his sculptures like photographs, and creates a sense of permanent
distance using scale. Light and shadow are integrated through color, not solely
relying on natural light to shade his work. He purposely uses light, distance,
and space (or the illusion of all three) to create conflict between reality
and perception. His sculptures can read as flat paintings at one angle, or
as a sculpture occupying distinct space at another.
Rannikko blurs the line between what your eye is seeing and what your mind
perceives.
Vesa-Pekka Rannikko is a 2007 nominee for the Carnegie Art Award for Nordic painting, the 2006 Stina Krooks Stiftelse Award, Fine Art Association of Finland Ducat Prize (2003) as well as many other awards and government grants. His work can be found in public and private collections such as Kiasma, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki City Art Museum, Amos Anderson Art Museum, Arabia Museum and The Fine Arts Association of Finland in Helsinki.
